Toronto Pearson Airport weather conditions during the incident

A massive snowstorm hit eastern Canada on February 17, 2025. Hours before the incident, Toronto Pearson Airport warned that while the snow had stopped coming down, high winds were moving in.

“Today, we’re expecting a busy day in our terminals with over 130,000 travellers on board around 1,000 flights,” the airport said on X.. “Airlines are catching up after this weekend’s snowstorm that dumped over 22 cm of snow at the airport.”

At the time flight DL4819 was landing, Air Traffic Control (ATC) reported winds of approximately 20-30 miles per hour (32-48 kilometers per hour), with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour).

“What we can say is the runway was dry and there was no cross-wind conditions,” Airport fire chief Todd Aitken said in a press briefing.

The Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team to the airport to investigate the incident.

A Delta Connection flight operating from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), United States, to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Canada, encountered an incident upon landing, prompting an emergency response at the airport.

The flight, DL4819, was operated by an Endeavor Air Bombardier CRJ900, registered N932XJ, on behalf of Delta Air Lines. The aircraft departed MSP at 11:47 local time and touched down in Toronto at 14:13 local time.

Pictures and footage shared on social media show the fuselage of the aircraft upside down on the runway, with both wings severed.

“Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis. Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for,” the airport acknowledged via its official Twitter account.

Local media outlet CP24, citing emergency services, reported that up to eight people may have sustained injuries. The severity of the injuries remains unclear.
